Daniel Evans joined Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s trip to China to explore opportunities for collaboration and growth.

Alongside 60 business and cultural leaders, the trip included a delegation from the West Midlands with Mayor Richard Parker and Chief Executives from leading Midlands businesses, such as Jaguar Land Rover. The West Midlands is a thriving cultural and innovation hub, producing a mix of world-class theatre, TV, film and music alongside a vibrant tech hub.

This visit coincided with the RSC's production of Matilda The Musical’s international tour, which is visiting China for the third time, 15 years on from its first performance at the RSC in Stratford-Upon-Avon. To date, the production has been seen by 12 million people in 100 cities worldwide.

Co-Artistic Director of the RSC Daniel Evans said

“The Royal Shakespeare Company is proud to share the best of British theatre with audiences around the world, strengthening the connections and joy that theatre brings across borders. The 2026 Matilda The Musical China tour showcases world-class British creativity and supports more than 100 jobs for UK nationals.

“Running from February to August, this acclaimed, multi-award-winning production will delight over a quarter of a million audience members across China. First performed on our stage in Stratford-upon-Avon in the heart of the West Midlands in 2010, Matilda The Musical continues to inspire audiences across the globe.”
