We have awarded two major prizes recognising excellence in creative practice and education, highlighting the enduring impact of Shakespeare across performance and learning.

Patsy Rodenburg OBE, RSC Emeritus Director of Voice, received this year's Pragnell Shakespeare Birthday Award.

PRAGNELL SHAKESPEARE BIRTHDAY AWARD

This year’s Pragnell Shakespeare Birthday Award was awarded to Patsy Rodenburg OBE.

The prize honours individuals whose work has deepened understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of Shakespeare, with previous recipients including Sir Kenneth Branagh, Dame Judi Dench and Sir Patrick Stewart.

One of the world’s most influential voice practitioners, Rodenburg has transformed how Shakespeare is spoken, heard and understood in performance.

Originally trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, Rodenburg has worked extensively with both the RSC and the National Theatre.

As Head of Voice at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama and through her long-standing collaborations with leading theatre institutions across the globe, she has shaped generations of actors, embedding vocal clarity, emotional truth and a deep respect for Shakespeare’s language at the heart of their craft.

Her achievements include being awarded an OBE, and in 2025 she was appointed Emeritus Director of Voice at the RSC.

JOHN JENNINGS AWARD FOR SERVICES TO EDUCATION

Now in its second year, we also presented the second John Jennings Award for Services to Education to former Headteacher and founder of Silhouette Youth TheatreLeigh Wolmarans.

This special prize was created in memory of John Jennings, a beloved loyal patron and audience member for decades, and held many close friendships inside of the RSC’s community of supporters. As an RSC supporter, John was passionate about bringing Shakespeare to young people, and this award fittingly recognises individuals who have made a significant impact on how young people connect with Shakespeare

In the year we celebrate 20 years of transformative partnerships with schools, theatres and communities, Wolmarans’ work exemplifies the impact of the work on young people’s learning and life outcomes.

As Headteacher of Lings Primary School in Northampton and now CEO and joint Artistic Director at Silhouette Youth Theatre, he uses Shakespeare’s plays and live performance to create an environment where pupils can explore language and their ideas with confidence and imagination.

The award was presented by two members of the RSC Youth Advisory Board, Ashton and Sayana, both former pupils at Lings Primary School and members of Silhouette Youth, who were introduced to Shakespeare through Wolmarans’ work.
