Marking 20 years of transformative partnership working with schools and theatres, the RSC has today announced that Olivier award-winning actress Harriet Walter will reprise her role as Brutus in a landmark touring production of Phyllida Lloyd’s all-female Julius Caesar, alongside several other anniversary events.

“Young people deserve world-class theatre – the absolute best of the best. If they can’t afford to come to us, we’ll come to them.”

The production will tour to schools in England for five weeks in September and October, followed by performances at The Other Place in Stratford-upon-Avon between 5 and 28 November.

First performed at the Donmar Warehouse in 2012, Julius Caesar will become the latest in our First Encounters with Shakespeare series of productions aimed at younger and first-time audiences. Centred around a group of female prisoners who choose to perform Shakespeare's play to express their preoccupations with freedom and justice, the play will run at approximately 90 minutes in length.

Alongside the tour, which will be co-produced by the RSC and KPPL Productions, there will be a supporting programme of workshops, post-show discussions and sharing opportunities. These will offer young people from mainstream and alternative educational settings the opportunity to respond creatively to the themes and ideas of the play. Audiences will be invited to explore connections between the play, its setting and our world today with cast, creatives and speakers from communities and the criminal justice system.

Dame Harriet Walter said:

“In an increasingly polarised world, it is more important than ever to equip young people with the ability to express their own creative ideas with confidence, agency and individuality and to explore the rich vocabulary Shakespeare has given the world.”

Building Partnerships: A 20-year Story

Other highlights in the anniversary programme include:

  • 16-19 September: a new piece of verbatim theatre from Barnsley-based charity LUNG presented by young people from our Next Generation programme.

  • 18 September: a one-day symposium sharing best practice, learning and reflections on the transformative role of cultural partnerships on the lives of young people;

  • 21 November: a Young Creatives Festival programmed and co-produced by the RSC’s Youth Advisory Board. The event will feature contributions from the Julius Caesar company and see over 200 young people gather in Stratford for an inspirational programme of workshops, panel discussions and debates, examining themes of justice, governance, leadership and the power of words to inspire and affect change.

Deputy Executive Director and Director of Creative Learning and Engagement, Jacqui O’Hanlon added:

“We are incredibly proud of the work we have undertaken in collaboration with extraordinary teachers, young people and partner theatres over the past 20 years. They have irrevocably changed our understanding of the value of Shakespeare’s work in education and we now have a 20-year evidence base that describes the very real difference that an arts rich education makes to a child’s life and learning outcomes. All children should have this entitlement, but all children don’t…We hope that in the next 20 years, that argument will be won and all children, irrespective of background, will have equal access to the arts.”
