SOLT report highlights vital role of theatre in society and jeopardy faced by sector

The report from the Society of London and UK Theatre calls for the Government to restore investment in the arts, invest in physical infrastructure and guarantee every student the opportunity to see live theatre.

The Society of London and UK Theatre (SOLT) has published a new report, The State Of British Theatre In 2025.

The report demonstrates the vital role theatre plays in communities and for the wider economy, as well as the jeopardy the sector faces without sustained investment for capital infrastructure, rising costs and clear protection for intellectual property with developments in Artificial Intelligence.

We reach audiences from Penzance to Shetland in the UK and from 74 counties around the world, selling well over 1.5 million tickets a year. Our award-winning learning programmes reach half a million young people annually through 2000 teachers and 1000 schools.

As the Government considers interventions to boost the economy via the industrial strategy and changes to the curriculum to provide children with a more rounded education, we urge them to work with the performing arts sector to unleash the power of theatre, which will improve the lives of individuals and support communities.

The SOLT report uses a number of case studies, including our world-wide success, Matilda The Musical, as a powerful example of how the UK’s creative industries – publishing, theatre and film – are deeply interconnected, and shows the creative economy in action.
