We're supporting Captioning Awareness Week, a campaign to make the arts more accessible for deaf, deafened and hard of hearing audiences this November.

This week marks the 21st anniversary of arts charity Stagetext's first captioned performance, our production of The Duchess of Malfi at the Barbican in November 2000.

We now provide captioned performances for all our shows, with our next captioned performance taking place this Saturday (20 November) and again on 11 December for The Comedy of Errors at the Barbican, We also have captioned performances of The Magician's Elephant coming up, on 27 November and 15 December.

Stagetext, which provided the captioning for us on that first captioned performance, is a deaf-led charity which works to make the arts a more welcoming and accessible place.

To celebrate the 21st anniversary of that first captioned performance, there is a free exhibition looking back at Stagetext’s history at the Barbican until 9 January 2022.

To find out more about our captioned performances, as well as our other assisted shows, see our Assisted Performances page
