Explore some of Michael Boyd's previous productions in our theatres, including his hugely ambitious Histories Cycle.

In 2018 we welcomed Michael Boyd back to the RSC for the first time since leaving as Artistic Director in 2012 to direct Christopher Marlowe's ambitious epic, Tamburlaine. Take a look through some of the highlights from his previous productions below.

The Histories Cycle

Michael Boyd staged all eight of Shakespeare’s history plays, titled The Histories Cycle, from 2005 – 2008. This season culminated in ‘The Glorious Moment’ where all eight plays were staged over four days, with 34 actors playing around 264 parts. Tom Piper’s industrial design for all the plays featured a central cylindrical tower and the set was constructed to echo the Courtyard Theatre’s ‘rusty’ exterior.

Other Productions

Michael Boyd has directed many productions in the last 30 years at the RSC, before and during his tenure as Artistic Director; including Much Ado About Nothing (1996), A Midsummer Night's Dream (1999), Hamlet (2004) and Macbeth (2011). Take a look through the gallery below.
