RSC CASTING UPDATE ON TIMON OF ATHENS

TIMON OF ATHENS
By William Shakespeare

Directed by Simon Godwin

Swan Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon, 7 December 2018 – 22 February 2019

Press Night: 13 December 2018, 7pm

The performance on 15 January 2019 at 1.15pm will be filmed for future broadcast.

Simon Godwin returns to the RSC following his acclaimed productions of The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Hamlet to direct Kathryn Hunter as Timon in Shakespeare’s sharp satire on wealth and greed and betrayal.

Poignant, funny and bitter, this is a rare chance to see Shakespeare's most modern creation: a story of how the world moves from privilege to poverty with heart-breaking speed.

Kathryn Hunter returns to the RSC for the first time since she was part of the 2010-12 Ensemble, playing Juliet in Ben Power’s A Tender Thing, Cleopatra in Michael Boyd’s production of Antony and Cleopatra, the Fool in King Lear, and Gavrilo in The Grain Store.  Her many other stage credits include: One Green Bottle for the National Theatre of Korea; Out of Blixen at the Print Room; Bernada Alba in The House of Bernarda Alba at the Royal Exchange; The Emperor at the Young Vic, Home and in Luxembourg; Cyrano in Cyrano de Bergerac at Southwark Playhouse; Bernadette in Sotto Voce in Florida and Red Peter in Kafka’s Monkey at the Young Vic and in New York.  Kathryn’s films include The Tale of Tales, Puck in Julie Taymor’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Mrs Arabella Fig in Harry Potter – The Order of the Phoenix, Secile in Mike Leigh’s All or Nothing, Wet and Dry – Brief Encounters, Orlando, Baby of Macon and Maria’s Child.  Her television work includes Flowers, NCS: Manhunt, Silent Witness and Grushko.

The cast or Timon of Athens also includes:  Salman Akhtar (Lucillius), Sagar I M Arya (Painter), James Clyde (Sempronius), Anton Cross (Caphis), Ralph Davis (Poet), Ross Green (Merchant/Varro’s Servant), Zainab Hasan (Jeweller), Debbie Korley (Alcibiades), Rosy McEwen (Flaminius) Sam Pay (Ventidius), Riad L Richie (Servilius), Vivienne Smith (Isadore’s Servant), David Sturzaker (Lucullus) and Edmund Wiseman (Demetrius).   Further casting will be announced in September.

Simon Godwin is directing the National Theatre’s forthcoming production of Antony and Cleopatra. His other theatre credits include: Twelfth Night, Sunset at the Villa Thalia, The Beaux’ Stratagem, Man and Superman and Strange Interlude for the NT and The Cherry Orchard on Broadway.

Joining Simon on the creative team are: designer Soutra Gilmour, lighting designer Tim Lutkin, music by Michael Bruce, sound by Christopher Shutt and movement by Jonathan Goddard.
