Songwriter and musician Gaz Coombes, best known as the guitarist and lead singer of alternative rock band Supergrass, comes to the RSC for one night only, performing material from his across his six-year solo career, including his much loved recent album Matador.
From the 1995 teenage pop tearaway as one third of Supergrass, to the hugely acclaimed, fiercely self-sufficient solo artist who has seen his latest album Matador nominated for the Mercury Prize 2015 and Ivor Novello Album Award 2016, it has been an extraordinary 20-year journey for Gaz Coombes.
Since going solo in 2010, Coombes has released two albums, both immensely well-received by fans and media alike. His newer work sees a departure from the upbeat Britpop of Supergrass, showcasing a darker and more experimental edge; the music on his latest offering has been described as ‘dreamy’, and ‘raw, confessional’ by critics.
Coombes will perform in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon for one night only on Sunday June 19 2016.
Coombes will be supported by American indie-pop artist Piney Gir, who will bring tracks from her latest album, mR hYDE’S wILD rIDE, to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
Tickets are available from the RSC box office.
Praise for Matador:
“That likeable scamp from Supergrass is shedding his youthful skin to emerge as a serious and fascinating artist.” – Mojo, 5*
“Coombes’s voice has always been a powerful pop instrument, thrillingly on the edge of hysteria. On Matador, it’s also a howl of pain.” – The Guardian 4*
“an artist who becomes more interesting with each release” – The Line of Best Fit
