The Mechanicals from A Midsummer Night’s Dream are stuck in lockdown. They can’t rehearse their play in the forest so they’re trying out rehearsals on Zoom - “a marvellous convenient place.”

Quince is enthusiastic, but the realities of making a play via video call might be more ‘merry and tragical’ than the Mechanicals are ready for.

Hal Chambers (Assistant director, Comedy of Errors, 2020) directs members of the current RSC company in this reworking of A Midsummer Night’s Dream Act 3 Scene 1.

Play video

Hal has taken inspiration from the challenges he’s been facing in trying to rehearse a play from the other end of a screen. How do you get anywhere when none of your actors are in the same room, half of you are having internet issues, and there’s that one person who just won’t stop talking?
