"I tried, and I made it"

William Kamkwamba, How I Built a Windmill TED Talk 2007

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind follows the true story of William Kamkwamba when he was a teenager living in the village of Wimbe, in the country of Malawi in south-east Africa.

Following periods of extreme weather including torrential rain and drought, William’s family and many others in his village were at risk of starvation. Using discarded materials, library books, and relentless determination, he built a windmill that brought electricity to his family’s home.

William’s story has since sparked imagination and hope around the world, with his legacy living on in the work of the Moving Windmills Project which provides solar energy and clean water all over Malawi whilst partnering with communities to expand access to education and learning spaces.

Inspired by the steps taken by William to make lasting change in his village, the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Youth Advisory Board have created this changemaking toolkit, a resource to inspire changemakers of all ages to make a lasting impact in their schools, communities and world around them.
