CELEBRATE THE MAGIC OF THE MIDSUMMER WITH THE RSC

CELEBRATE THE MAGIC OF THE MIDSUMMER WITH THE RSC

DANCING, MUSIC AND CRAFTS

Following the Fairy Portal Camp (2016) and Midsummer Roman Feast (2017), the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) this year invites people of all ages to come together this Midsummer and imagine a different ending for the star-crossed lovers of Romeo and Juliet.

In a moment of peace, at a dance, Romeo and Juliet meet and fall in love. The RSC invites romantics and dreamers to join them at this most magical time of year to recreate that moment together, imagine a happier ending - and dance.

Artists from Kinetika, one of the UK’s leading outdoor arts organisations, will create a Midsummer Dance Party like no other, with opportunities to make costumes and decorations, learn dances and join in. The choreography will be available in advance of the event as a special tutorial video, which will be launched on the RSC’s social media channels on 11 June.

Visitors are invited to the RSC tipi for an all-day drop in craft and making workshop to make fun things to wear and decorations for the party on 23 June, in preparation for the dance. 24 June will then see three different dance workshops spring up across the Swan gardens, a procession, and a very special mass finale of all the dancers. The craft tipi will also open again so visitors can finish their creations.

Kinetika and the RSC are also holding three drop-in dance workshops across 29 and 30 May to develop a mass dance for the Midsummer Dance Party. These practical, fun and energetic hour-long workshops are accessible to all ages, with a family session at each. They will be held at Warwickspace and Stratford- upon-Avon High School on 29 May and at the Clore Learning Centre on 30 May.

Timings for both days are:
11am-12pm: Families
2-3pm: 13–17 years
3.30-4.30pm: 13-17 years
5-6pm: 18+

The RSC will be recruiting a core group of dancers, aged 13-17, from the May half-term workshops, to help lead the dancing. No experience necessary. Core group dancers will need to be available for rehearsals on the evenings of 11 and 12 June.

All events are free. To book a place on the May half-term workshops, visit www.rsc.org.uk/mayhalfterm. No booking required for the Midsummer Dance Party itself.
