Introduction to THE RSC'S 77TH ANNUAL SUMMER SCHOOL

We are delighted to welcome you to this year's online summer school with sessions that offer insight into our current productions, including talks from leading academics and sessions with actors and directors.

The RSC Summer School is delivered in collaboration with the Shakespeare Institute. The Institute is an internationally renowned research and teaching institution based in the heart of Shakespeare's beautiful Stratford-upon-Avon established in 1951 to push the boundaries of knowledge about Shakespeare studies and Renaissance drama. The University of Birmingham and the Royal Shakespeare Company have a long standing collaboration, working together on teaching, research and engagement.

On this page, you will find the link you need to join today's live session at 10am (BST). You can find out about other online sessions via this link. We are pleased to be able to stream 10 of the sessions from our 77th RSC Summer School so that you can join us from wherever you are in the world.  

Sheridan's School for Scandal: What is a 'Comedy of Manners'? - Wednesday 14 August 

The livestream will start at 10am (BST) and will be approximately an hour in length. You can access the session via the link below which will take you to Vimeo. We recommend you try to watch at the allocated time, but the session will be available for catch up until 5pm on Friday 30 August.

The most enduringly popular of Sheridan’s plays has conventionally been described as a comedy of manners, a term sometimes stretched to include The Importance of Being Earnest and the novels of Jane Austen. In this session, Louise Curran discusses what sorts of behaviour does the play really depict, and why are they still funny?
