Our apprenticeships create new opportunities for people who want to take a work-based path into backstage theatre.

Our apprentices are equipped for future employment in the theatre industry by learning from experts and being supported by mentors and learning providers. Areas include operations, automation, learning, front of house, carpentry and scenic engineering.

Kate, Automation Apprentice

"I fly scenery and people using winches and computer programming. Every day is different, so I walk in not necessarily knowing what I’m going to do but knowing that it’s going to be interesting and I’m going to learn stuff.”

Our apprenticeships are intended for people who want to take a work-based path into backstage theatre and offer the opportunity to gain Level 2 (equivalent to GCSE grade A*-C/9-4) and/or Level 3 qualifications (equivalent to an A Level). On average, apprentices spend around 80% of their time at the RSC and 20% with their training provider.

We work in partnership with a nationwide network of 12 Associate Regional Theatres across the country as well as our training providers Chichester College, Solihull College and University Centre and Stratford-upon-Avon College.

As an apprentice, you will train and earn a salary, whilst studying towards a professional qualification, with all coursework time included in your contracted hours.

"You get work experience, you understand the world of work and the industry you’re going into and you start getting connections, you start meeting people. You get the best of everything - the education, the paperwork behind you, the technical skills, the practical skills and just general experience which is worth its weight in gold.”

What apprenticeships mean to the RSC

As well as a theatre, the RSC is a national centre for teaching, training, learning and research about Shakespeare and theatre arts.

Apprenticeships are part of our ambition to create progression routes for young people with under-represented protected characteristics and/or from lower socio-economic backgrounds into targeted apprenticeship opportunities across all areas of our work.

All our apprenticeships are advertised online on our current vacancies page. You can sign up to have new apprenticeship opportunities sent straight to your inbox through our job alerts.
