Antony and Cleopatra tells the story of the two Eqyptian and Roman rulers and how their romance ends in tragedy. 

Antony and Cleopatra is a great play for looking at alongside other tragic romances, such as Romeo and Juliet, and addresses lots of themes you can use as routes into the text including:

  • Leadership
  • Revenge
  • Love 

There are so many different ways of exploring the text but you may find the following particularly useful in introducing the text:

If you are studying the play for A-Level or are teaching 16-19 year olds, we are also offering young people the opportunity to get involved by creating a film as part of our For the Good of Rome Film Challenge which asks learners to respond to the themes in Shakespeare's Roman plays, including Antony and Cleopatra
