2013: Maria Aberg production

Maria Aberg directed this production in 2013 following her riotous production of King John in the Swan Theatre as part of the World Shakespeare Festival. It played as part of our summer season in 2013 in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and then toured to Newcastle.

Rosalind was played by Pippa Nixon and Orlando by Alex Waldman.

Music for the production was composed by Laura Marling. The English musician had been nominated twice for the Mercury Music Prize and won the Best Female Solo Artist at the 2011 Brit Awards.

In this production, when Rosalind and Orlando are banished from the oppressive court, they are forced to run for their lives into the wild depths of the Forest of Arden. However, in that harsh, lyrical wilderness, they discover an unexpected freedom, and as their anarchic love story unfolds, Arden bursts into summer.

You can hear more about Maria's vision for this production in the Director's Talk which was recorded in the summer of 2013.
