Shakespeare's  Macbeth, written in English to please a Scottish King, was translated into Scots by the late Robin Lorimer in1992.  The Scottish play, played in Scots, brings to vibrant life Shakespeare's bloody tale of ambition, treachery and downfall. The Scots tongue is a rich mixture of Scots and English with dark, sinewy and fast-flowing  words, the play is heightened by atmospheric lighting, sound and staging. A particular feature is the constant presence of the Weirds (witches) overseeing and influencing events.

Edinburgh Theatre Arts is delighted to present this shortened version of the text as their contribution to the Open Stages initiative.

About Edinburgh Theatre Arts

Edinburgh Theatre Arts (ETA) has been in existence since the late 1940s. After an itinerant existence the company settled for 20 years in their Coach House Theatre. In a space accommodating 40 people, ETA presented classic plays to great acclaim.

Now based in St Ninians Hall, in the Stockbridge area of Edinburgh, the company continues to develop its reputation for presenting challenging and innovative works. ETA's theatrical season consists of a one week Spring show and a two week run on the Edinburgh Fringe. In addition, ETA's annual Burns supper has graced Edinburgh Castle, The Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the Scotch Malt Whisky Society.

The company has appeared regularly at drama festivals in England and Wales, winning acting and directing awards and being crowned NDFA (National Drama Festival Association) British full-length play winners four times. Nearer home, the company is a twice winner of the Evening News Fringe Drama Award.
