Eastward Ho!, 2002
Playwrights: George Chapman, Ben Jonson and John Marston
Director: Lucy Pitman-Wallace
Costume Designer: Robert Jones
Eastward Ho! (c.1605) was the first of five plays by Shakespeare's contemporaries that were put on at the Swan Theatre in 2002. The whole season was overseen by director Gregory Doran and all five plays were performed by the same 28 actors. Critics praised the production saying it was 'explosively funny' and a 'bright pleasure'.
The play opened amidst a storm of controversy. Adrian Noble had just announced his resignation after over 10 years as artistic director. Campaign groups were protesting over plans to redevelop the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
