Get free entry to The Play's The Thing to celebrate our first birthday, and get a free tea or coffee when you buy a slice of cake.

The Play's The Thing, our permanent exhibition of props, costumes and other RSC materials, turns one year old on 22 October. To celebrate the success of our first year, we're inviting visitors to explore the exhibition free of charge on the big day.

What's more, visitors who buy a slice of cake in the Swan Café will receive a free cup of tea or filter coffee to enjoy with it.

The exhibition closed briefly last month to change over the exhibits and has now reopened with a wide range of interactive elements:

  • Explore our director’s ‘desk’ to see the inspiration behind some of our most acclaimed shows
  • Play Hamlet using state-of-the-art gaming technology
  • Use our Magic Costume Mirror to try on virtual costumes and take a photo
  • Read our A-Z of Shakespeare’s secrets and stories about the gory details of theatre making

You can also see a rare copy of Shakespeare's First Folio, the 1623 collection of his plays.
