Julius Caesar

Shakespeare probably wrote Julius Caesar in 1599.

It is sometimes known as one of his 'Roman Plays', together with Antony and Cleopatra and Coriolanus, because all three are set in Ancient Rome.

Julius Caesar portrays the 44 BC conspiracy against the Roman dictator Julius Caesar, his assassination and the defeat of the conspirators at the Battle of Philippi.
