About the Weekend

Join us in Stratford-upon-Avon for an unforgettable theatre experience working with our technical, design and stage management teams. The Big Backstage Weekend offers workshops, masterclasses and backstage insights, for anyone who wants to develop their technical theatre skills.

The weekend includes behind the scenes access to our technically innovative new production of Troilus and Cressida directed by Artistic Director Gregory Doran, and a ticket to see the show on Saturday evening.

You have the choice of four practical workshops over the weekend, giving the opportunity to learn skills, techniques and ideas from our highly skilled and experienced team of technicians, designers, production and stage managers. You will be able to choose four workshops from below (click on the names to find out more):

The weekend ticket price also includes:

  • a ticket to see our new production of Troilus and Cressida in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre at 7.15pm on Saturday 10 November
  • a backstage technical tour of our theatres
  • a ticket to The Play’s The Thing, our behind the scenes exhibition
  • lunch on both days


Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 November

Registration is from 9.30am at The Other Place on Saturday 10 November
The weekend will finish by 5.30pm on Sunday 11 November

All workshops take place in our rehearsal rooms as well as onstage and backstage in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon.

Price £200 (does not include accommodation)

Participants must be 18+

Morning: Sound Practical or Stage Management

Afternoon: Sound Design or Production Management


Morning: Basic Lighting Practical or Set Design

Afternoon: Advanced Lighting Design or Set Construction 


Tickets are available by calling the RSC Ticket Hotline on 01789 403493 or in person at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre Box Office.

Early booking is recommended as places are limited. Tickets are not available online.

You will be able to choose your four workshops when you book your ticket for the Weekend. Workshops will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

All sessions are suitable for both those starting out and those with more experience, except for Advanced Lighting Design where some previous experience of lighting is desirable. An enrolment form will be sent to you so you can tell us about your previous experience and any areas you’d particularly like covered.
