Farewell Mandela from RSC

Nelson Mandela died yesterday at the age of 95. Everyone here is deeply saddened by this news. We mourn him but we also celebrate his amazing life. Rest in peace Madiba.

Gregory Doran, RSC Artistic Director, writes:
Nelson Mandela had access to a copy of Shakespeare on Robben Island. He signed his name next to these lines from Julius Caesar:

Cowards die many times before their deaths
The valiant never taste of death but once.
Of all the wonders that I yet have heard,
It seems to me most strange that men should fear,
Seeing that death, a necessary end
Will come when it will come.

Mandela was a truly valiant man.

Sir Antony Sher, RSC Associate Artist, writes:
Mandela embodied the best of being human. He made us South Africans proud. Now - cry the beloved country.
