Pragnell clock keeps time

Pragnell clock keeps time in the new Royal Shakespeare Theatre

Stratford-upon-Avon based jeweller, George Pragnell, has donated the new clock that keeps time in the new Royal Shakespeare Theatre's Ruinart Circle Bar.

The clock, which complements the restored 1932 theatre clock located in the Scott Bar, was designed and made by George Pragnell's clockmaker, Smith of Derby Ltd, and takes its design cue from the Art Deco architecture of the original theatre.

The simple elegant black design is set onto the mirror behind the Ruinart Circle Bar and can be seen by visitors to the theatre.

The clock maintains a long family tradition of support for Shakespeare beginning with the Pragnell Shakespeare Birthday Award, first awarded in 1990 and awarded this year to Sir Patrick Stewart CBE, followed by a gift towards the fundraising campaign to build the new theatre and corporate membership.

Vikki Heywood, RSC Executive Director, said: 'The Pragnell clock is a lovely addition to the new theatres and fits in beautifully with the design of the building. Working in partnership with local companies is incredibly important to the success to both Stratford-upon-Avon and the RSC and we are delighted to work with George Pragnell as a long-term supporter.'

Charlie Pragnell, Managing Director at George Pragnell said: 'The recent development of the RSC theatre has been a great success for the RSC and great for Stratford-upon-Avon. George Pragnell is very proud of our association with, and support of, the theatre. We have no doubt there are some wonderful productions to be enjoyed this year and we are keen that everyone gets to their seats in good time.'

The RSC is currently celebrating its 50th Birthday Season, with the first new productions designed specifically for the new stages now underway. The 50th Birthday Season features Macbeth, The Merchant of Venice and revivals of some of the RSC's greatest plays, including a new staging of Marat / Sade. For further details, visit
