Some rise by sin, and some by virtue fall
When deputy Angelo is given free reign over Vienna, he uses his new powers to launch a crusade against the city's loose morality. But when a condemned man's sister pleads for a pardon, Angelo's desire proves stronger than his principles and he makes her a truly indecent proposal. Will she trade her virtue for her brother's life?
Shakespeare puts moral and religious double standards on trial in this dark and fascinating exploration of virtue as political currency.
Measure for Measure is directed by RSC Associate Director Roxana Silbert, whose most recent work for the RSC includes Dunsinane, first seen at London's Hampstead Theatre in 2010 and recently performed as part of the 2011 summer season in the Swan Theatre, and Little Eagles which premiered at Hampstead Theatre in April this year.
We offer workshops and events for students to support this production.
