T-shirt and jeans worn by David Tennant
Director: Gregory Doran
Designer: Robert Jones
There was a great deal of public interest in the lead up to this production of Hamlet. The successive sell out shows at the Courtyard Theatre demonstrated the popularity of David Tennant, the actor playing Hamlet. Tennant had become a well known television actor playing the lead role in Dr Who. He was not new to the Stratford stage, having made his first appearance in 1996.
This costume is casual and modern. It made a stark contrast to the smart outfits that the other cast members wore. This casual appearance also alienated Hamlet from the grand world of the court. The designer, Robert Jones, created a world of mirrors and glittering chandaliers. This created a sense that nothing was hidden.
