Prompt Book
US, 1966
Playwright: Denis Cannan (b.1919) Director: Peter Brook
Prompt books are used to ensure the smooth running of a stage production. They are generally kept by the stage manager. A prompt book includes a full copy of the script on which to make notes on the staging of the play.
US was performed at the height of the Vietnam War (1955 – 1975). It was viewed by many as a pacifist protest against the war. It could have been subject to censorship laws because of how it portrayed Americans who were our national allies. The play was intentionally challenging to its audience. Most critics found it very uncomfortable to watch.
