Costume design for the Duke
Measure for Measure, 1962
Director: John Blatchley Costume Designer: Alix Stone
In this production the Duke was played by Tom Fleming. The costume design is done in watercolours and shows the Duke's disguise of a friar's habit.
The cast and creative team for this production were a mixture of new and old faces in Stratford. Tom Fleming, Judi Dench (Isabella) and John Bury (set and light designer) were relatively new to the RSC. Others like John Blatchley and Ian Holm (Claudio) had worked in the old Shakespeare Memorial Theatre. The production marked a new coherence for the Company and an artistic identity that was to define the RSC for much of the 1960s.
