Excavation of the basement

John Doyle continue their work on the concrete substructure and superstructure: the walls and cores of the new structure are reaching upwards beyond the upper public levels of the new thrust stage auditorium.
A major activity still to be completed is the excavation of the basement under the thrust stage. Very wet conditions have meant that special means are needed to exclude the underground water from the area. This is being done this week by using a special rig to inject sealing materials into the ground surrounding the piling that was installed earlier this year to form the new basement's outer wall.
Elsewhere on site Doyles are excavating between the Swan Theatre and the Library and Gallery building to lay new drainage underneath what will be the southern end of the new linking foyer that will join the new RST auditorium to the existing Swan auditorium.
