CLASSROOM RESEARCH ON TEACHING SHAKESPEARE

Over the academic year 2006/7, 17 teachers (Primary and Secondary) undertook the Postgraduate Certificate in the Teaching of Shakespeare, a new course accredited by the University of Warwick and run jointly between the University's Institute of Education and the RSC.

The teachers were a wide-ranging group in terms of age, teaching experience and the geography of the schools they worked in. Their connection was that their schools had all successfully applied to become part of the RSC's Learning and Performance Network.

During the year, the teachers came together for five days' training at RSC and Warwick facilities. The training was practical, and looked at utilizing rehearsal room techniques in the classroom to facilitate students' enjoyment and understanding of Shakespeare's plays. Each teacher undertook an action research project examining the effectiveness of the practical approaches for their own students and then submitted their findings.
