A Manifesto for Shakespeare in Schools

WELCOME

Stand up for Shakespeare is our manifesto for Shakespeare in schools.

Our campaign to ensure that children and young people have a positive experience of Shakespeare in schools is receiving great support, and we'd like to thank all of you who have signed up already.

Please spread the word amongst your family and friends and urge them to 'Stand up for Shakespeare' and be counted! The more signatures we get, the stronger our voice will be when lobbying for a national adoption of these approaches in the classroom.

If you want to get involved in supporting the manifesto, take part in the National Stand up for Shakespeare Assembly Week starting on Monday 26 January 2009. During the week, schools across the country will be exploring what Shakespeare means to them and debating why we still study Shakespeare. For more information, download our assembly packs:

Featured Statement:

I fully support both the teaching of Shakespeare at all ages and through using active, theatre-based approaches. I use these methods myself with success in A Level & BTEC teaching. I am also concerned that exam boards are removing Shakespeare from their syllabi e.g. Ed Excel has designed a syllabus for A Level English Literature that doesn't need to include Shakespeare! This way cultural impoverishment lies.

Well done for your initiative!
