Text Search Tips
The text search queries the word list built from text associated
with individual records, including the subjects and keywords
assigned to them, eg:
- A search for "building" finds
items that have the word "building" in their data. It will also finds items associated
with a keyword or subject "building".
You can build more complex search questions using the following
elements:
- Boolean operators OR, AND or NOT
- Parentheses
- Wildcard characters
Boolean operators
Boolean operators enable you to combine separate search
terms to create more complex search queries. Only records
that meet the full search question are displayed, eg:
- A search for "churches AND post offices" finds items
with both the words churches and post offices.
- A search for "churches OR post offices" finds
items with either churches or post offices.
- A search for "churches NOT stone built" finds
items with churches, excluding those records that include
stone built.
Parenthesis
Use parenthesis to organize the order in which the parts
of the search are made, eg:
- A search for "(churches AND post offices) AND stone
built" finds items with both churches and post offices
provided they include stone built.
Wildcards
Use * to locate a specific text string or part of a word.
Use the Advanced Search
to query specific data fields.
Note: Do not use punctuation marks when searching for items. These will not be picked up by the search engine and will return a nil result.
