Searching for pictures

To search, type a word or phrase in the box at the top of the left hand panel and click on the ‘go’ button.

This picture collection contains over 3500 images drawn from the history of the RSC. For example, search for ‘Romeo’ to find a wide variety of images: costumes worn on stage by well-known actors; photographs of them in rehearsal or on stage; paintings and prints of theatrical stars from the 18th and 19th century.

To find out how to refine your searches look in the ‘search tips’ section, or try the ‘advanced search’ which allows you to search in particular fields using the exact word or phrase.

Themes

Themes bring together a collection of images under a particular topic e.g. ‘Supernatural’ which will bring up images from ‘Macbeth’, ‘Hamlet’ and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.

Subjects

Words used to describe the images are placed in a hierarchy of subjects. The subject directory contains the top level hierarchy such as ‘hats’ and allows you to click down the hierarchy to view the range of subjects, such as ‘caps’, ‘bowlers’ and ‘trilbys’ etc. The subject index contains all subjects, such as ‘caps’, ‘bowlers’ and ‘trilbys’ and you can click on these to see the images under those subjects.

Search History

Clicking on ‘Search History’ allows you to review your previous search results lists.

View Selection/Personal Folder

You can also select images and save to a personal folder by clicking on the check box next the folder icon when viewing the thumbnail, medium or zoom image. The personal folder is saved during your current browser session.
