Searching for pictures
To search, type a word or phrase in the box at the top of the left hand panel and click on the ‘go’ button.
This picture collection contains over 3500 images drawn from the history of the RSC. For example, search for ‘Romeo’ to find a wide variety of images: costumes worn on stage by well-known actors; photographs of them in rehearsal or on stage; paintings and prints of theatrical stars from the 18th and 19th century.

section, or try the ‘advanced search’ which allows you to search in
particular fields using the exact word or phrase.
Themes
Themes bring together a collection of images under a particular topic
e.g. ‘Supernatural’ which will bring up images from ‘Macbeth’,
‘Hamlet’ and ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’.
Subjects
Words used to describe the images are placed in a hierarchy of
subjects. The subject directory contains the top level hierarchy such
as ‘hats’ and allows you to click down the hierarchy to view the
range of subjects, such as ‘caps’, ‘bowlers’ and ‘trilbys’ etc. The
subject index contains all subjects, such as ‘caps’, ‘bowlers’ and
‘trilbys’ and you can click on these to see the images under those subjects.
Search History
Clicking on ‘Search History’ allows you to review your previous search results lists.
View Selection/Personal Folder
You can also select images and save to a personal folder by clicking
on the check box next the folder icon when viewing the thumbnail,
medium or zoom image. The personal folder is saved during your
current browser session.
