James Purnell statement on Arts Council funding 2008 - 2011
12 October 2007
The Royal Shakespeare Company applauds James Purnell’s statement today announcing £50m extra funding for the arts by 2011.
Vikki Heywood said: "This is great news. We, along with many other organisations, have campaigned to encourage the Government to continue its investment in Britain’s cultural life and we’re delighted this has been recognised in the DCMS plans for the next three years.
"The arts in the UK are successful. They provide inspiration and creativity in so many spheres. Public investment is vital if we are to retain that reputation and continue our commitment to developing audiences and artistic excellence.
"The RSC’s epic Complete Works Festival last year saw 530,000 tickets sold for every one of Shakespeare’s 37 plays, sonnets and long poems in productions by the RSC and 30 visiting companies from all over the world.
"Our 2008 season, which includes all eight of Shakespeare’s History Plays performed by a single company in London and Stratford and a dynamic programme of new work, draws on that legacy and demonstrates the benefits of long-term investment for the enjoyment of all our audiences.
"Thank you, Government, for making the right, brave decision today. This news ensures that we will be able to deliver the best cultural programme possible over the next three years."
