Liz Thompson to join RSC as Director of Communications
07 June 2007
Liz Thompson, Head of External Relations at the Environment Agency, has been appointed the new Director of Communications at the Royal Shakespeare Company, taking up her post in late June 2007. Liz is appointed following the departure of Roger Mortlock to join the Soil Association as Deputy Director.
Liz brings a wealth of experience in building relationships with stakeholders, including communities, government and international organisations, and leading a range of internal and external communications campaigns.
After studying History at Cambridge, Liz joined the Public Affairs and Lobbying Department at Burson Marsteller in 1987. After a few years, she decided she’d rather be on the side of the angels and became a corporate fundraiser for Turning Point, the drugs, alcohol and mental health charity. She also worked as a volunteer counsellor at a drug project in the East End.
She moved to the Countryside Commission in 1992, taking on a range of PR and marketing activities. She led the PR and corporate identity programme for the new Countryside Agency, ran the £20m Millennium Greens programme, working with local communities to create 250 new green spaces in England, and developed strategies for e-business and stakeholder engagement.
She joined the Environment Agency in 2003 to develop new programmes to improve customer, community and stakeholder relations for the 12,000 strong organisation.
She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and has been a trustee of several charities and campaigning organisations. She is married with a young daughter and lives in the Cotswolds.
Commenting on her appointment, the RSC’s Executive Director, Vikki Heywood, said:
“I’m delighted Liz will be joining the RSC. We are looking forward to welcoming her at a very important moment in the life of the Company.’
