Christmas productions to play at the Civil Hall in Stratford-upon-Avon and Comedy of Errors to tour UK
21 February 2007
With work due to begin on the transformation of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre (RST) this spring, the RSC will perform its repertoire of Christmas 2007-08 productions at the Civic Hall, Rother Street in Stratford-upon-Avon.
The productions at the Civic Hall will start with the eagerly awaited stage adaptation of Malorie Blackman’s acclaimed book Noughts & Crosses, directed and adapted for the stage by Dominic Cooke, former RSC Associate Director, and now Artistic Director of the Royal Court Theatre, London. The story, reminiscent of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, is a modern day tale of star-crossed lovers set in a surreal world where you are either a ‘nought’ with white skin or a ‘cross’ with dark skin, and violence ensues when the two try to mix.
The next show in the repertoire – Fantastic Mr Fox – comes to Stratford from the home of British puppetry The Little Angel Theatre in London, with whom the RSC has recently worked to create the critically acclaimed puppet adaptation of Shakespeare’s poem Venus and Adonis.
This version of Roald Dahl’s classic tale of wit and determination is brought to life with ingenious rod puppets and enchanting music. Performed by four puppeteers, Mr Fox’s incredible story is told by the makers of previous hit shows “Jabberwocky” and “The Mouse Queen”.
The Courtyard Theatre will meanwhile continue to perform Shakespeare’s History plays in repertoire until Spring 2008. A season of previously announced plays will run April – August 2007 in the Swan Theatre.
