RSC wins three Olivier awards
20 February 2007
The Royal Shakespeare Company has won three prizes at the 2007 Laurence Olivier Awards.
Tamsin Greig was named ‘Best Actress’ for her role as Beatrice in Marianne Elliott’s production of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, won two awards – ‘Best Director’ for former RSC Associate Director, Dominic Cooke, and ‘Best Revival’.
Dominic Cooke will be returning to the RSC in November to direct his own adaptation of the Malorie Blackman novel, Noughts and Crosses, which will play Stratford-upon-Avon's Civic Hall.
The awards, which were held at Grosvenor House, Park Lane on Sunday (18 February), are handed out annually to productions running in London. Much Ado About Nothing enjoyed a successful season at the Novello Theatre between December 2006 – January 2007, and The Crucible played the Gielgud Theatre between March – June 2006.
Both shows transferred to London after first being seen at the RSC’s Stratford theatres: The Crucible in the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in early 2006, and Much Ado About Nothing, as part of the RSC’s Complete Works Festival, in the Swan Theatre between May and October 2006.
Commenting on the awards, Vikki Heywood, RSC Executive Director, said:
"What a triumph for the RSC at the Olivier Awards on Sunday. I’m absolutely delighted that the Royal Shakespeare Company brought home three of these prestigious awards: Tamsin Greig took the Best Actress Award for her role as Beatrice in Marianne Elliot’s production of Much Ado About Nothing, and former RSC Associate Dominic Cooke won Best Director for The Crucible, which also received the award for Best Revival for the RSC.
"The Olivier Awards only honour work that is seen in London. I am proud that the productions which we have taken to the West End this year have received such recognition, and this sense of pride is rightfully shared by everyone at the RSC who worked to make the shows such a success both in Stratford and beyond."
