The RSC provides a full understudy programme to ensure that, wherever possible, we are able to continue performances in the unfortunate event of illness or injury to a member of the acting company, Understudy roles are agreed at the first stage of casting and our actors rehearse their understudy parts throughout the main rehearsal period, in addition to their normal role. After the Press Night, a full understudy run takes place, under real performance conditions, with full set and lighting - and costumes when possible.
The only thing is missing is our audience. Understudies ensure that they are able to perform the role they have rehearsed in front of an audience. For them, this is a key moment in their development as an artist in the company. For you, it is an opportunity to see some of the leading actors of tomorrow, performing some of the most challenging roles in Shakespeare.
Previous examples of actors who have understudied leading roles at the RSC at the beginning of their careers include: Emily Watson, Matthew MacFadyen, David Oyelowo, Daniel Evans, Ray Fearon, Sophie Okonedo and Toby Stephens.
