Staging the Supernatural

Who's this? Louise Bangay plays a witch.

Context: The actors worked with Liz Ranken, the movement director, to develop the style for the witches. They made a magic circle with rope on the floor and, using candles and percussion to enhance the atmosphere, explored a sequence of movements for each of the elements of earth, air, fire and water. Keeping an intense atmosphere, they used mirroring and shadowing exercises to work with the male 'human' actors to create the sense of supernatural forces leading and controlling the lives of men. As each man exactly followed a set sequence of moves established first by a witch, the scene developed a feeling of ritual.
