Who's this? Dominic Cooke is the director.

Context: Although written in 1606 Macbeth is about a period of history 600 years earlier. The real Macbeth ruled Scotland in the middle of the 11th Century. This suggests a wide choice of ways to dress the characters: a rugged style to give the impression of Macbeth's actual time, a style from Shakespeare's time to remind us of the author's world, or a style from the modern-day to encourage us to identify with the characters. However costume may be used more to give an impression and feel to the piece rather than being specific to a place and time. This production has a late 19th century atmosphere with a suggestion of late Tsarist Russia to suggest a mood of political turmoil.
