Historical context

Who's this? Richard Cordery plays Duncan.

Context: Inherited kingship was an important issue in Shakespeare's time. Obviously it had been a major anxiety for Elizabeth I's father, Henry VIII as he went through six wives in an attempt to be sure of a male heir! Elizabeth had executed James I's mother, Mary, Queen of Scots, to avoid attempts on her life. But when Elizabeth died leaving no heir James inherited the throne of England.

Did you know? The implication of the line of kings shown by the apparitions in Macbeth is that this will lead directly from Banquo to James I, reinforcing James' right to the throne of Scotland.
