How costume helps define character

Who's this? Toby Stephens plays Hamlet.

Context: 'The apparel oft proclaims the man' says Polonius.

There must be a high level of communication and understanding between the designer, the production team and the actor to ensure that an individual costume works for both the character and the actor. A design may have to be modified and many adjustments made for this to be right.

At the technical rehearsal the production team see how the costumes play against the set and under the lighting for the first time and whether any last-minute alterations are necessary. Even at this stage a costume may have to be re-dyed to get the colour shade exactly right.

Did you know? In 1989 Mark Rylance wore pyjamas and a large bed dominated the action.
