Ways into role

What does a director do?

Who's this? Michael Boyd works with Toby Stephens, Sian Thomas and Richard Cordery.

This scene is in two parts:
Part one is playing - Part two

Did you know? This is the Ashcroft Room used for rehearsals in Stratford. In rehearsal, besides the Director, there will be the Assistant Director and the Deputy Stage Manager recording the decision-making process. Also present might be the Stage Manager, Assistant Stage Manager, the Designer, the Fight Director, the Voice Coach and members of the Music, Costume or Make-up departments to try out ideas and get the feel of the production. For further details of these roles look at RSC Theatre Skills.

Red lines on the floor indicate the position of a feature of the set, in this case a trapdoor. Behind the actors a mock-up of the set is essential for a sense of stage space, environment and entrances. The actors will have only one or two rehearsals on-stage before opening to an audience.
