Characters and relationships

Hamlet
Claudius
Gertrude
Ophelia

Gertrude: guilty or innocent?

Who's this? Sian Thomas plays Gertrude.

Context: Gertrude's journey: an actor playing Gertrude is faced with a dilemma - how much does she know? Is she as much a victim as Hamlet, with no idea of Claudius' involvement in the death of Old Hamlet, her previous husband? Or are we to imagine she was attracted to a younger, perhaps more dynamic, brother whom she would willingly - and quickly - marry? Could she even be an accomplice?

If she is an innocent victim, at what point does she realise the truth?

Think about: Act 5 Scene 1. Claudius and Laertes refer to their plans for Hamlet's death. Gertrude is still on stage with them. How near should she stand? Can she hear them? Is she suspicious?
