Ophelia

Why does she seem to turn against Hamlet? The director's opinion

Who's this? Michael Boyd is the director.

Context: Ophelia could offer hope for the future for Hamlet - he feels, after all, betrayed by everyone else, even his own mother. However when she is told to return his gifts she obeys her father. She even lies to Hamlet denying that Claudius and Polonius are listening to the conversation. But Hamlet has already lied to her, denying he ever gave her anything. Does she feel hurt or indignation? Surrounded by such a cruel male world where is there for her to go?
