Identifying character

Who's this? Stephen Brimson Lewis is the designer.

Context: Costume can play a major role in identifying character. The audience needs to recognise the four central figures of the lovers and it is important to be able to follow each individual character's story. The designer can use the detail in clothing to bring out elements that distinguish between characters. The audience will read the clues to interpret the different personalities and background stories. The designer felt the clues about status and attitude would be easier to read in modern dress than in period costume which looks less familiar.
