Context: The disobedient daughter: Hermia's situation is at the heart of the play. She seems to be a strong character. Maybe she has a temper. According to Helena, 'She was a vixen when she went to school', and she seems ready enough to use her nails in a fight. She is certainly prepared to defy her father in order to marry the man she wants. Rather than submit to Egeus' authority, she will risk the dark forest beyond the civilised world of the court. She is more than just a passive figure. Like Juliet she is prepared to take extreme measures in order to get her own way. |
