Lear's daughter Goneril has ordered him to send away half of his 100 servants. He is enraging, angry with himself for handing power to his daughter. He attacks her, surprised at his own emotion, and calls on Nature to make her infertile.

Even though he hasn't yet heard about what happened to Gloucester, Albany criticises his wife Goneril for her treatment of her father. Growing angry, Goneril throws insults at him, calling him a coward and saying he should be preparing to fight the French army. They are interrupted by a messenger who arrives to announce that Cornwall has died.
