Rehearsing Act 1 Scene 1, where Lear decides how to divide his kingdom between his three daughters.

In the finished production, Goneril wears a long dress in a heavy fabric so Kelly is wearing a rehearsal skirt over her trousers to experience how wearing a long gown will change her movements.

To aid his development of Lear's movements, Greg Hicks (Lear) sits on a rehearsal throne and wears a thick heavy cloak.

During rehearsals, the Deputy Stage Manager lists any props or costume items requested by the director which are sent to the rehearsal room from our stores by the RSC Props and Hire Wardrobe teams.
Lear's cloak and Cordelia's crown seen in this photograph will have been chosen by the actors from a selection sent from the stores. Rehearsing with a few key items of costume helps the actors develop their characters.
