RSC production 2008
Gregory Doran directed this RSC production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, a revival of his 2005 production. His preparations in 2005 included extensive research into the references to myths and the natural world to better understand what the play would have meant to its original audience.
Designer Francis O'Connor updated Stephen Brimson Lewis's original set, transforming the designs from the RST's proscenium arch for The Courtyard's thrust stage. The magical set retains the dark glass-like floor and huge moon which progresses slowly across the sky during the play. It is added to by another moon feature on the back wall, and tens of twinkling bulbs hanging above the stage.
