Charabanc trip to Stratford

December 13, 2011

Wednesday 7 December 2011

Today we had our company charabanc trip to Stratford. For some of us it was a first visit, and some of the company who have worked at the RSC before had not seen the newly transformed theatre.

It's a multi-purpose thing, this trip up the M40. It's a chance for us all to meet many of the people who are Stratford-based – Education, Development, Events, Press, Marketing etc. We hear how they support and drive the work of the RSC and how we can work with them and support what they do. We did that over a very good buffet lunch.

Then we all get measured up by the brilliant wardrobe team. We have a voice and movement session on the RST stage – which is really useful because it gives us all a chance to see and feel the space that in which we will be working come March.

And then, of course, it was a chance for the old lags to take the newbies off to the Duck for a pint. The day was rounded off us all watching The Heart of Robin Hood in the main theatre. It was terrific; energised, witty and fun.

It was as a result of our trip that I'm starting this blog. They asked. I answered. We're actually some weeks into rehearsal on the What Country Friends Is This? season. We started at the beginning of November and have already run two of our three plays. Well, not properly. Most of us are some way from being 'off the book' but it gave us a chance to understand the shape of the plays and the journey our characters take through them. I'll tell you a bit more about the process next time.

Emily TaafeI asked some of the company what the 'best thing' was in our Stratford trip:

Emily — the gin and tonic

(I prepared a little treat of gin and tonics (with ice and lemon of course) for the coach journey home)

Kirsty

Kirsty — the swans

(of Avon!)

Felix

Felix — the chocolate covered strawberries

(apparently now available in the Swan Bar)

(The What Country Friends is This? plays are; The Tempest, Twelfth Night and The Comedy of Errors, and are part of the RSC's World Shakespeare Festival)
