Plunging into Pericles

Voice work

September 17, 2012

This has been a full on week… back to school, house move imminent, and four nights of rehearsals.

Had two voice sessions this week. One with Michael, in which we practised how to overcome my slight nasality in my voice, and one with Victoria, who works on Matilda. I was a little bit awestruck, I'll admit.

The work we did was a little odd at first, after all, it's not often you meet someone and within minutes of introductions, you're lying on the floor heavy breathing and making guttural sounds.

The things that we discovered about my voice came as a surprise, even to me.

We looked at making the sound emit from my back, which sounds weird, but can be done.

Now I need to practise what I've been taught, use the techniques and exercises, and make sure that the dialogue still sounds natural, but maintaining resonance and being anchored to ensure that we fill the huge space that is the Courtyard.

We played with our scenes in Tarsus this week, and I enjoyed the collaboration between us and our directors.

Ideas are welcomed, and bad habits that I wasn't aware of are being pointed out, but in the nicest possible way.
